We will soon be launching our new myGCP Powerapp. We are incredibly excited about it and will give you an insight into its development in this blog. Why this app? Because we ran into an old, ingrained pattern and would like to break it. Recognizing your knowledge of the rules of clinical research needs to be more efficient, which is why (the mandatory) GCP certification is woven into the system. How does the app work? We share the rationale behind building the app and give a preview of what the app environment looks like. What are the experiences with the app? We also engaged in continuous learning and, of course, conducted a few pilots. We would like to share the most striking and exciting results with you.

In the previous two parts of this 3-part series, we discussed the whys and hows of this app. This last part is about the experiences of the pilots.

Part 3: What are the experiences with the app?

As natural scientists, we conducted pilots with the Powerapp before launching the app. We continuously challenge ourselves to improve our products, seeing this process as a form of continuous learning. For this, customer feedback in the form of reviews, digital data analysis and the pilots we have conducted is essential. For example, a pilot with the target group CRAs (clinical research associates) is underway.

The Importance And Applicability Of The Knowledge.

During the pilot, participants indicated that they considered knowledge of laws and regulations more critical for their clinical research work than at the pilot’s beginning. This may suggest that participants are consciously incompetent at first. Then, we see that increased applicability of knowledge is reported during the use of the Powerapp. Thus, participants become consciously competent and start using their knowledge more. Something that improves the quality of clinical research in general and, more importantly, the safety of subjects.

Devices

The myGCP Powerapp can be installed on smartphones, tablets and desktops. Whereas 90% of the myGCP e-learnings are taken on desktops, 90% of the myGCP Powerapp is used on cell phones. This a striking finding. Consequently, the Powerapp is used during working and leisure hours. 25% of the participants say they do it in a quiet moment during working hours, 65% at home when they have nothing else to do or in between when they are waiting for something (the train or bus, for example). In contrast to more classic GCP training, learning via the Powerapp is much less at the expense of working time!

Manner Of Learning.

Suppose you have yet to start learning at all about the WMO, GCP, EU CTR and VGO, and you have access to the following learning tools: e-learning and myGCP Powerapp. So how would you prefer to structure your learning to become demonstrably qualified? We put this question to the participants of our pilot. Over 60% chose to do e-learning and keep up the knowledge via the Powerapp. With this, we started working. We are looking at adapting our e-learnings to fit seamlessly with Powerapp. Even though the e-learnings are also in the Powerapp, the new way of learning takes some getting used to for many users. Researchers with a lot of GCP experience will save time using the app anyway because they will go through the questions faster.

Time Investment.

We cannot determine how much time participants want to put into the app. We don’t want the time investment with the myGCP Powerapp to be greater than traditional GCP training. However, we do need the quality to go up. The time investment with the Powerapp appears comparable to the classic training. Even though the time investment is more significant for some users, it is more efficient and less at the expense of working time because the app is used a lot ‘in between’. It is precisely this ‘in between’ learning, the short time investment each time and the repetition, that ensures that the knowledge is stored well and retained.

Triggers.

Logically, users of the myGCP Powerapp should be encouraged to keep their knowledge up-to-date, especially since it is necessary to use the app more regularly than people are used to in GCP training sessions. Once a year-long training versus weekly, short activity in the Powerapp. We asked our users which ways of “reminding” they found most pleasant or valuable. Reminders by e-mail and invitations to a knowledge game scored very well. It is nice to mention that many participants who scored well with the Powerapp indicated that they no longer needed to be triggered but that the app had become a habit.
